Native Tree Plantings
Next time you’re around the Waterworks Area, particularly near the shelters along the western settling basin, notice the introduction of several newly planted trees. We worked with WeissEarley Landscape Design & Contractors and DCNR to develop the plan and the Partnership purchased the trees from local nurseries. The project consisted of removing dead trees and snags to make way for white pine, pin oak, white oak, witch hazel, and sugar maple.
In Fall of 2024, we continued our commitment to reforesting Presque Isle with native species through a tree-planting project at Perry Monument. Partnering with Weiss-Earley Landscape Design & Contracting, we planted five white pines in the newly paved parking lot and six swamp white oaks along the Misery Bay seawall leading to Perry Monument. The project also involved removing five dead trees from the parking area, with DCNR felling the trees and Weiss-Earley handling stump removal.
This initiative aims to reintroduce native species that once thrived on Presque Isle but have diminished due to invasive plants and insects and the dominance of eastern cottonwoods. Looking ahead in 2025, we plan to focus reforestation efforts in the Perry Monument area, aligning with DCNR’s up-coming refurbishment of the monument itself. These efforts will enhance the area’s natural beauty and ecological balance for years to come.
