A Walk to Remember...
The Partnership also organizes the Presque Isle Walk to Make a Great Park Better, a great event to enjoy autumn on the peninsula and to raise money for a good cause. It is a three mile walk that takes place annually to honor the memory of David P. Hanlon, former Millcreek Intermediate High School assistant principal, teacher, coach, and community icon. This year's walk took place on Sunday, October 18. Students from McDowell High School and Millcreek Intermediate High School walked and cleaned the beach areas in honor of Hanlon. They have embraced the spirit, commitment and service he gave to PI State Park.
Students get pledges to walk from friends, family, and members of the community. The money raised from the walk supports the park and funds memorial scholarships in Mr. Hanlon's name to deserving McDowell HS seniors. Over $5,000 in scholarships were awarded in 2006-2007. Participating students enjoyed a cookout with Smith’s hot dogs and Italian sausage, and live music by Sam Hyman following the walk. A special thanks goes out to all the participants and those who volunteered to help make a great park better!
